چکیده

The Paraguayan crude drug "tayï pytá" is used to treat cancer, wounds and inflammation. It consist of the bark and trunkwood of Tabebuia heptaphylla (Bignoniaceae). A phytochemical study of the crude drug gave, in addition to previously described naphthoquinones and the known lignans cycloolivil and secoisolariciresinol, three new lapachenol (lapachonone)-, two naphthofuran-, a chromone and a naphthalene derivative. The structures were elucidated by means of high field NMR spectroscopy. The biological activity of the main compound lapachol and the related alpha-lapachone as well as the lignans cycloolivil and secoisolariciresinol can explain, at least in part, the effect atributed to the crude drug in Paraguayan folk medicine.

Evolution of a Charismatic Neotropical Clade: Molecular Phylogeny of Tabebuia s. l., Crescentieae, and Allied Genera (Bignoniaceae)

Tabebuia is one of the most commonly encountered genera of Bignoniaceae in the neotropics. Previous research has suggested that this genus may be paraphyletic and contain the tribe Crescentieae. Molecular sequence data of the chloroplast trnL-F and ndhF regions were used to reconstruct the phylogeny of Tabebuia, Crescentieae and related genera. A previously unrecognized clade of Neotropical, ar...

Modulatory effects of Tabebuia impetiginosa (Lamiales, Bignoniaceae) on doxorubicin-induced somatic mutation and recombination in Drosophila melanogaster

The wing Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) in D. melanogaster was used to study genotoxicity of the medicinal plant Tabebuia impetiginosa. Lapachol (naphthoquinone) and β-lapachone (quinone) are the two main chemical constituents of T. impetiginosa. These compounds have several biological properties. They induce apoptosis by generating oxygen-reactive species, thereby inhibiting t...

Effects of the Aqueous Extract from Tabebuia roseoalba and Phenolic Acids on Hyperuricemia and Inflammation

Tabebuia species (Bignoniaceae) have long been used in folk medicine as anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, antimicrobial, and antitumor. The aim of this study was to investigate if aqueous extract from the leaves (AEL) of Tabebuia roseoalba (Ridl.) Sandwith, Bignoniaceae, and its constituents could be useful to decrease serum uric acid levels and restrain the gout inflammatory process. HPLC anal...

Leaves of Tabebuia bahamensis, collected on Abaco Island, Bahamas, were dried and extracted with dichloromethane to yield a crude extract. Using preparative flash column chromatography on silica gel, enabled the isolation of ursolic acid with an excellent yield of 2.06 percent based on the mass of dry leaves. Both the crude leaf extract and ursolic acid produced selective in-vitro cytotoxic act...
